art deco

Art moderne is also termed art deco although the latter title is uusually reserved to creations in the art and crafts. As a style it was hugely fashionable in the Unuted States where it is epitomized in Rockerfeller Center, New York City. It was popularized in stage steeings for American movies and in automobile,  locomotive and industrial design.

Now and again this style was translated into housing which is not unlike industrial applications. RSB Plastics, whose main office is seen above on Fauxburg Road  shows some of the characteristic features: a flat roof,  multiple corner windows, protective roofing or overhanging insets over doors,  The roof itself has no overhand. . Glass brick lights  at a corner were used to give illumination to staircases. These were also sometimes placed in the vicinity of a door.  The designers of these buildings preferred square windows.

This one-time service station in Mahone Bay on Main Street  shows a design repeated elsewhere in Nova Scotia.  That sub-roof creating an overhang above the door and windows is typical. The windows extend around the corner.  This was an attempt to gain spatial freedom. In European buildings of this kind that is managed by making a building of  reinforced concreted with stainless steel support sashes in the window. When this was translated to wood, a hefty beam was placed at the corner, onscuring the view and negating any advantage gained from this design feature. The original garage doors probably did have this stairway look but the original doors probably had a number of circular windows.

In the originals, mostly skyscrapers in large cities, corners near ground level were often rounded and the use of circular windows was somewhat overblown. When the whole plan was pulled down to a single storey problems of adaptation became insurmountable.  In New Galsgow there is a home which has used stucco over brick to give the impression of concrete but it doen't quite work as the outlines of  individual bricks poked through that coating soon after constructions. The flat-roofed was constant problem and the glass bricks conncentrated the rays of the sun in summer.
